Renowned "Wheel of Fortune" Host Pat Sajak Announces Retirement

Pat Sajak, renowned as the host of the popular American television show "Wheel of Fortune" since 1981, has announced his intention to retire next year. On Twitter, Mr. Sajak, aged 76, stated, "The time has come. I have made the decision that my final season will be our 41st season, commencing in September."

Throughout his tenure of over four decades as the show's host, more than 10,000 individuals have auditioned for "Wheel of Fortune," which has consistently attracted a weekly viewership of over 26 million, as reported by Sony Pictures Television, the studio that holds ownership of the show.

Suzanne Prete, the executive vice president of game shows at Sony Pictures Television, expressed her gratitude and pride for having Pat as their host for all these years in a statement on Monday night. Ms. Prete also stated that the studio eagerly anticipates celebrating his exceptional career in the upcoming season.

Ms. Prete further revealed that Mr. Sajak has agreed to serve as a consultant for three years following his final season.

At present, it remains uncertain who will assume the hosting responsibilities upon Mr. Sajak's retirement. Vanna White, Mr. Sajak's long-standing co-host, did not make any comments on social media during Monday night. In 2019, she briefly filled in for Mr. Sajak when he underwent emergency surgery for a blocked intestine.

During Ms. White's temporary role as host, Mr. Sajak's daughter, Maggie Sajak, took over the puzzleboard responsibilities typically handled by Ms. White. Ms. Sajak currently serves as a social correspondent for the show, responsible for posting digital content.

Originally created by Merv Griffin in 1975, "Wheel of Fortune" engages contestants in solving word puzzles to compete for cash prizes. Since its premiere, the show has awarded over $250 million in total prize money, according to Sony.
